Kool & The Gang, the group with a sound that has influenced the music of three generations, has sold over 70 million albums worldwide. Songs like “Celebration,” “Cherish,” “Jungle Boogie,” “Summer Madness” and “Open Sesame” have won two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 Gold and Platinum albums. Kool & The Gang has performed continuously for the past 30 years, longer than any R&B group in history. Their ticket to longevity has been the evolution of their music.
Kool & The Gang found a special sound at the unique intersection of Jazz, R&B, Funk and Pop. From the loose groove of “Funky Stuff” to the wild stomp of “Jungle Boogie,” the gentle romance of “Cherish” to the elegant disco of “Ladies Night,” and the street-smart chant “Hollywood Swinging” to the international anthem, “Celebration,” it’s an extraordinary sweep of popular music created by the same core players: Robert “Kool” Bell; his brother Khalis Bayyan; their longtime friends Dennis “DT” Thomas, the late Charles Smith and George “Funky” Brown; and past members Robert “Spike” Mickens, the late Ricky West, and Woody Sparrow.
In 1998, the corporate members of Kool & The Gang formed KTFA Entertainment, Inc. In July 2004, KTFA released Kool & The Gang’s 24th album “The Hits Reloaded,” a collection of past songs such as “Celebration,” “Too Hot,” and “Jungle Boogie,” collaborated with today’s artists such as Lil’ Kim, Sean Paul, Ashanti, and Blackstreet.
In August 2006, Kool & The Gang will release their first studio album in 10 years. “Still Kool,” to be distributed by Bayside Distribution, features the new single “Steppin’ Into Love,” a mixture of vintage Kool & The Gang and today’s flava added for good measure. With a retail bow at No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales Chart, Kool & The Gang saw their first entry on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart since 1989. In addition, a “Still Kool” DVD documentary will arrive in stores in July.
